The rules for online play in Ontario
April 4, 2022 is the date Ontario opened its regulated online casino market. Since then, a private online operator is legal in Ontario only when two things are true. It is registered with the AGCO, the regulator. Second, it has an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.
Checking a site is something you can do on your own. iGaming Ontario runs the directory of these operators, the official one, at igamingontario.ca. If an operator is missing from that directory, it does not meet both conditions. Age and place matter as well. Online play is for people 19 and older, the same age limit that applies at the door of a casino. You also have to be physically in Ontario while you play.
Where OLG.ca fits
OLG.ca is the Ontario government's own online casino, run by OLG. Play there is open to people aged 19 and up who are physically inside Ontario at the time. OLG has a second role that touches Peterborough directly: it conducts and manages casino gaming in Ontario. Private service providers run the casinos day to day, and on Fisher Drive that is Great Canadian Entertainment, under its Shorelines Casinos brand. The casino is part of OLG's East gaming bundle.
BetGuard and My PlayBreak
BetGuard, at betguard.ca, is iGaming Ontario's self-exclusion for online play. A single sign-up blocks a person aged 19 or older from each regulated Ontario gambling site, and OLG.ca is part of that. The length is up to you: a custom period, or 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. Casinos you walk into, the one on Fisher Drive included, fall outside it.
That job belongs to My PlayBreak, OLG's self-exclusion program for land-based casinos. Every casino in Ontario stays closed to you for the term you pick, whether 1 to 5 years or 3 or 6 months. Nobody can end it early. Casino staff can enrol you, so can a PlaySmart Centre coordinator, and the OLG Support Centre takes enrolments by phone at 1-800-387-0098.
How this guide is paid
Bets and accounts have no place here, since this guide is not a casino. Ad appears beside every paid link, and none exist outside the home page. Their three spots: the menu button, a block under the opening-hours tool, and one more near the page bottom. Each sends you to a single online casino partner, run privately, that pays this guide a commission. This partner is not permanent and may be replaced.
That partner is not OLG.ca. It has no connection with OLG, the AGCO, Great Canadian Entertainment or any casino in this guide, including the one on Fisher Drive. Before using an online operator, you can search for it at igamingontario.ca, in the directory iGaming Ontario runs.
Quick answers
How do you know whether an Ontario online casino is legal?
Check the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca. A private operator is legal in Ontario only when it is registered with the AGCO and has an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.
Does the casino on Fisher Drive run an online casino?
The guide holds no details on one. The casino's page is on the operator's site, greatcanadian.com, and that is the place to ask.
Does BetGuard cover the casino on Fisher Drive?
Casinos on land are outside what BetGuard covers. Instead, it removes a person from every Ontario site with regulated gambling, OLG.ca as well. For the casino, the program is My PlayBreak.
Why does the home page carry Ad links?
The guide is paid through them. All three home page links carry an Ad label, and they go to one partner running a private online casino. That partner, which may change down the road, sends a commission to this guide. No other page carries paid links.
